At Corporate Express, we believe that everyone has the right to work in a safe environment. We’re committed to safe work practices, and that’s why we’re particularly delighted that our Occupational Health and Safety division was runner-up in the recent SafeWork Awards held by WorkCover NSW.
Stephen Elliott, National Manager OHS & QA, explains how this came about:
“The SafeWork awards are presented by WorkCover NSW, at the culmination of Safeweek in October each year. Safeweek is an annual get-together for the safety industry, centred around the annual safety trade show at Homebush and is a focus for the safety industry.
“Corporate Express was a Category One entrant – competing for ‘Best Workplace Health & Safety Management System’ with our Safety Shop system – a hybrid combination of Microsoft Excel and Word. It’s a simple yet elegant solution that will be used internally by our State Occupational Health & Safety contacts, by the Warehouse and in Operations.
“It contains safety procedures, statistics, current alerts and news, and it houses our corporate risk register as well.
“Really, it’s an overall knowledge database for anything related to health and safety within Corporate Express,” he adds.
Stephen began the lengthy formal submission process in July this year, by developing a case for the system, its use and application. Based on that submission, Safety Shop was accepted into the next round, which involved an on-site visit from WorkCover inspectors.
“This year, the finalists in each of the five categories attended a WorkCover dinner, where the winners were announced. We were delighted to be runner-up in category, and very encouraged by the remarks made by the WorkCover inspectors who visited our site.
“We’re happy that the company was recognised for its commitment to workplace safety and good risk management; one of our major objectives is to develop an OHS Risk Register so that workplace hazards may be more effectively identified, assessed, controlled and monitored.
“And we’re well on the way to doing just that, thanks to Safety Shop.”
The WorkCover NSW Safe Work Awards
Established in 2004, the WorkCover NSW Safe Work Awards was designed to promote and recognise high standards of occupational health and safety in workplaces around New South Wales.
While a safe and healthy workplace is a legal requirement for all NSW workplaces, these Awards seek to recognise those organisations and individuals who go the extra mile and lead the way towards safer workplaces. In addition, the Awards create an opportunity to share innovations and improvements with others – an important way we can help improve health and safety in all NSW workplaces.
Category One: Best workplace health and safety management system’.
This award recognises demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement of workplace health and safety outcomes through the implementation of an integrated systems approach.
